MTBE

A Glance at QAFAC’s Products

QAFAC’s long-term operational momentum propelled the corporation to shape its plants to produce 2,950 MTPD of Methanol and 1,830 MTPD of MTBE(Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether) on a daily scale.

What is MTBE

MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is a colorless flammable liquid that is structured by the chemical reaction between Methanol and Isobutylene. It’s basically used as a fuel additive in petrol, posing a remarkable impact on the mitigation of hazardous exhaust emissions. As a result, this chemical compound downplays the role of tetraethyl lead in the petrol field

how to produce MTBE

Fundamentally, MTBE is produced by processing Butane that is supplied by QatarEnergy, and Methanol that is supplied by QAFAC’s Methanol plant. This process designed by UOP, the key technology provider and licensor of MTBE plant

The production of MTBE passes through several units until it’s ready for the intended use:

ISOMERISATION UNIT

ISOMERISATION UNIT

At this unit, Butane is converted to ISOBUTANE at a high pressure and moderate temperature in presence of a catalyst and Hydrogen

BUTANE DEHYDROGEN UNIT

BUTANE DEHYDROGEN UNIT

At a high temperature and low pressure, IsoButane is converted to ISOBUTYLENE in the presence of a catalyst. Subsequently, IC4= rich effluent coming out from the reactors is processed, compressed, liquefied, and pumped into MTBE Synthesis Unit

MTBE SYNTHESIS UNIT

MTBE SYNTHESIS UNIT

At a moderate pressure and low temperature, MTBE is synthesized by the reaction between Methanol and Isobutylene in the presence of a catalyst. The unreacted Methanol and Butane are reprocessed and pumped back to the system. The final MTBE product is store and shipped to buyers.
